Soleimanieh wall paintings Karaj-Iran belongs to 18th century (Qadjars dynasty )

Dimensions: 325 .  195 cm
Oil paint on plaster

The wall painting is a part of main hall of the building that shows the king of Qadjar with his relatives. It is a unique piece of Art because it is the only one that remains in situe.
This restoration project takes place from august 2005 until 2007 (18 months).

Damages:

  1. previous improper restorations
  2. vandalism
  3. uncontrolled environment conditions
At the time of beginning of the restoration, middle part of the painting was covered with 5 layers of cloths which were pasted by unknown glue. Test result shows acrylic based glue which removed by mixture of solvents, and also there was a piece of painting that, ruined by hack in purpose to find treasure.
Cleaning
Painting was cover with a thick brownish layer of dioxide linseed oil. For the deferent degrees of degradation on colors, we chose different solvents to remove the old varnish. The mixture contains: Ethanol , Acetone, dimethylformamide, distilled water, with help of turpentine .
In process of cleaning we used different techniques :

1.    physical cleaning with a sharp scalpel blade
2.    solvents with swab
3.    solvents on Japanese tissue (on gold leaves)
CONSOLIDATION
In several places the paint layers had separated from the substrate. However, only in cases judged as urgent were loose paint flakes stuck back using Paraloid B72 (10% solution in ethanol) as sparingly as possible.
By using old documents and pictures we replace the particles in plaster context and retouch it with fine color strips.
